Be careful of social media hackers
Fraudsters are using compromised social media accounts to target new victims. Fraudsters will reach out to you to make new connections, followers, or friends. Criminals may then send you a direct message, asking you to open pictures or links, or ask you for personal information such as your cell phone number. The goal is to trick you into giving access or credentials to your device or your accounts.
Action Steps
- Do not give out your phone number, or open links in direct messages, even if it looks like someone you know.
- Protect your social media and other accounts from hacking by using unique strong passwords.
- Always use multi-factor authentication on social media accounts.
